What Is Internet Safety?

Internet safety is a set of habits, tools, and user awareness that helps protect personal information and maintain a secure local network. Internet safety strategies include everything from choosing strong passwords to recognizing and avoiding common online scams.

Internet safety is vital for all online users, whether they’re connected to fiber optic, cable, or satellite internet services. Don’t assume you can cut corners on internet safety if you live in a remote location: rural internet users are as susceptible to online threats as anyone else. If you use satellite internet for emails, banking, shopping, or entertainment, you need to understand why internet safety is important and take steps to secure your internet connection.

Internet Safety 101

Internet safety requires the consistent application of some simple practices. Take the following steps:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for every account. You can store them in a password manager app so you do not have to memorize them, but make sure you use an app from a reputable source.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) if it’s available. 2FA adds a second layer of security to protect your account, even if someone has your password, by requiring you to enter a one-time code sent to your phone or device via text. Two-factor authentication may also use biometrics, security keys, or push notifications.
  • Keep your devices updated. Software updates often include security fixes that protect against new threats. You can set most devices to update automatically.
  • Be careful with the information you share online. Limit what you post publicly and review your social media privacy settings. If a website asks for personal details that do not seem necessary, trust your instincts and stop.
  • Learn to identify secure websites that display a small padlock symbol in your browser and begin with “https”, instead of just “http.”

Common Internet Scams To Avoid

Unfortunately, online scammers are common and use a variety of tricks to fool you into giving up sensitive personal information. Fortunately, you can avoid scams if you know what to look for:

Phishing emails

These are fake emails or texts that pretend to come from banks, shipping companies, or familiar services. The scam usually claims to have identified a problem with your account and asks you to click a link that leads to a fake page. The goal is to steal your login information. Legitimate companies will never ask for your password by email. If you’re unsure if a message is a scam, go to the company’s website directly rather than using the link.

Tech support scams

These scams start with a pop-up window that says your computer is infected or needs immediate technical assistance. The window prompts you to click a link or call a number for help, which connects you to a fake service technician who either asks for remote access to your device or requests payment for repairs.

If you see a pop-up window that says you need urgent technical assistance, close your browser window and run a security scan. Such popups indicate that either your device is infected with malware or that you visited an unsecured site.

Online shopping scams

Shopping scams center around fake online stores that offer items at serious discounts – deals that are too good to be true, but tempting nonetheless. The “store” takes your money and personal information but never ships the product.

Your best defense against shopping scams is to be a cautious shopper. Before buying from an online store, check that the company has a physical address, read some online customer reviews, and remember that if a deal looks too good, it probably isn’t a deal at all.

Recognizing these scams helps protect you and the people you care about. The more familiar you become with common tricks, the easier it is to spot them early.
